Title

Sept. 6, 1912 A

Subject

Approach to Oswegatchie House, Waterford, CT

Description

Notes: I am assuming that Emma is traveling with her husband. Franklin N. Blake is listed in a 1911 publication of proceedings of the Atlantic “Deeper Waterways” Convention: http://www.archive.org/stream/annualconventio00assogoog/annualconventio00assogoog_djvu.txt Oswegatchie is a section of Waterford that borders the Niantic River, a navigable inlet along the Connecticut shore. The advocates for “Deeper Waterways” were interested in port improvements and new intra-coastal waterways (i.e. the Cape Cod Canal, begun in 1909 and completed in 1916). At the 4th annual convention, 1911, (recorded in this publication linked above,) the organizers announced that they would hold their next meeting in New London, at some point during the month of September. The Blakes were in Waterford so that Franklin could attend the 1912 convention. Emma says here and on other occasions that she has gotten a number of cards for Jennie. My guess is that these cards were sent along as a group. However, the collection may have been divided in two: the unmarked cards (so to speak) and those with messages.
