Subject

The Rotunda in the Stewart Building, John Wanamaker’s, New York

Description

Notes: Wanamaker’s was America’s first modern department store. He began business in Philadelphia and opened his original store there, within a half block of city hall. That store is still operating. Among other firsts, historians highlight Wanamaker’s innovative use of window displays. I didn’t realize that there was a New York store. The card highlights the theatrical setting Wanamaker provided for the drama of shopping.
