Subject

Description

Notes: “punch”… this may be a reference to a “Detex” clock, used by organizations employing watchmen. The clock kept a (paper) tape record of impressions made by a key which is ‘turned’ in the clock. By examining the tape, a supervisor can verify that the watchman had been at the location of the key at a particular time. See this link for historical information about this surveillance system: http://www.watchclocks.org/ This experience may have been one source of Olney’s lifelong interest in clocks.
