At the time of his death, in 1898, Dorsey, "The Prisoner's Friend," was a regional celebrity of the Northeastern United States.  Reknown for his philanthropy, he had given away all of his money.  He was eulogized in the New York Times for his compassion for criminals.

In this photograph he is wrapped in a blanket.
