Francis Wilson reproduced Cotton's letter in his book Recollections of a Player, New York, 1897. The letter was not transcribed; it was photographed, probably by Edward Bierstadt. So much of Cotton's life was designed to be public that even this private letter to Wilson seems like a counterfeit presentment, a correspondence written to an audience.
